event-related brain potentials during picture naming, using early and late acquired words

چکیده
background naming is a simple and basic skill of the language which involves semantic, lexical, and phonological levels. there are many different factors affecting the speed and convenience of naming. one of these factors is the word age of acquisition (aoa) and since language processing occurs at an extremely fast rate, psycholinguistics needs a method that has very good temporal resolution. the event-related brain potentials (erp) method is almost ideal among the imaging techniques of studying a language. objectives the current study aimed to investigate the electroencephalograph signals related to the time period of phonological encoding during immediate picture naming through the analysis of aoa effect. patients and methods in this cross-sectional study 15 male, native farsi speakers, aged 18 - 25 years participated. the test involved naming 80 pictures including 40 early-acquired words and 40 late-acquired words, presented by a monitor screen. eeg (electroencephalogram) was recorded continuously from 64 electrodes mounted on an electrode cap. the waves related to early and late-acquired groups were investigated in terms of amplitude, latency, and scalp distribution within a 300 millisecond time range linked to phonological encoding process. results the results showed that the pictures of the early-acquired words were named 40 millisecond faster than those of late-acquired words (p = 0.022). the difference between the two groups was significant on the latency and scalp distribution, but not significant on amplitude. conclusions according to the results of the study, aoa modulated response latencies (early acquired words were produced faster than late-acquired ones), indicating increased processing time-cost for late acquired words, which happens during the phonological encoding period (phonological code retrieval and syllabification). furthermore, the results seem to support a phonological encoding locus for the main aoa effects.

Facial attractiveness modulates early and late event-related brain potentials.
Facial attractiveness is of high importance for human interaction and communication, and everyday experience suggests that the mere aspect of a face elicits spontaneous appraisal of attractiveness. However, little is known about the time course of brain responses related to this process. In the present study, event-related brain potentials were recorded during attractiveness classification of f...

متن کاملWritten distractor words influence brain activity during overt picture naming
Language production requires multiple stages of processing (e.g., semantic retrieval, lexical selection), each of which may involve distinct brain regions. Distractor words can be combined with picture naming to examine factors that influence language production. Phonologically-related distractors have been found to speed picture naming (facilitation), while slower response times and decreased ...
متن کاملRepetition and Event-related Potentials: Distinguishing Early and Late Processes in Affective Picture Perception
A repetition paradigm was used to assess the nature of affective modulation of early and late components of the event-related potential (ERP) during picture viewing. High-density ERPs were measured while participants passively viewed affective or neutral pictures that were repeated up to 90 times each. Both ERP components were modulated by emotional arousal, with ERPs elicited when viewing plea...
متن کاملModulation of early and late event-related potentials by emotion
Although emotionally salient stimuli influence higher order information processing, the relative vulnerability of specific stages of cognitive processing to modulation by emotional input remains elusive. To test the temporal dynamics of emotional interference during executive function, we recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) while participants performed an effortful anticipation task with a...
متن کاملEvent-Related Brain Potentials during Initial Encoding and Recognition Memory of Congruous and Incongruous Words
Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded while subjects read statements followed by words that were either semantically congruous or incongruous with the preceding .phrase, and during a subsequent recognition test. Congruous words yielded smaller N4OOs and better memory than did incongruous statements. In addition, the ERPs to correctly recognized old words were characterized by an e...
